Planning Lawyer
£44,428 - £48,474
Hybrid - 2 days on-site per week
Day to day responsibilities:
Full range of development management work including advice on enforcement, applications and appeals (potentially including advocacy at hearings and inquiries), potentially planning committee attendance, planning obligations (including in respect of biodiversity net gain), highways/rights of way and community infrastructure levy work, assisting on court challenges (statutory and judicial review), development consent order processes, planning based compulsory purchase and planning policy work.
Management/technical supervision responsibilities:
Responsible for the management and supervision of those in posts of Senior Legal Assistant, Trainee Lawyer and/or Paralegal and any other members of the team as allocated.
Projects/interesting work likely over the next 12 months:
Dealing with the impact of biodiversity net gain (including the provision of Suitable Alternative Natural Green Space) and also European Sites (e.g. Severn Estuary Special Area of Conservation) will be a particular focus in the coming months including work in respect of specific planning obligations and potentially conservation covenants.
Assisting with judicial review work in respect of telecommunication masts (health impacts) and potentially community infrastructure levy liability notices, local plan work for all four of our client Councils (three of which have a joint plan). All in the context of the various changes due to come into effect in the next few months in respect of the National Planning Policy Framework and otherwise.
Commercial Lawyer
£44,428 - £48,474
Hybrid - 2 days on-site per week
Day to day responsibilities:
The individual will also be dealing with general contract and procurement matters, commercial work, construction contracts, grants (including subsidy control implications), projects and governance.
Management/technical supervision responsibilities:
The Commercial team comprises of a Senior Lawyer, 2 Lawyers (including this post), a Trainee Lawyer and a Paralegal. The current Lawyer manages the Paralegal. This post will support the Senior Lawyer and the other Lawyer with the supervision, mentoring and training of the Paralegal and Trainee Lawyer.
Project/interesting work to be involved in:
We are supporting our partners with implementation of the Procurement Act 2023.
There will be opportunities to be involved with the development of affordable housing schemes, grant funding for community based projects and setting up joint venture companies for the delivery of council functions.
Senior Property Lawyer
£49,498 - £53,675
Hybrid - 2 days on-site per week
Day to day responsibilities:
Sales, purchases, leasehold disposals, compulsory purchase orders, commercial landlord and tenant work, development/regeneration work, leases, licences, estate management work, assisting partner councils with major projects, advising and assisting partner councils on both commercial and residential property matters and governance issues, including politically sensitive and high value transactions.
Management/technical supervision responsibilities:
Jointly responsible for managing the property team alongside another Senior Lawyer. The successful applicant will manage half the Property team, comprising one Lawyer, one Senior Legal Officer, one Trainee Lawyer and one Paralegal. This will include work allocation, general management and supervision of one side of the team, direct line management of a Lawyer and supervising, mentoring and developing a Trainee Lawyer.
The role also includes being part of the Extended Management Team.
Projects/interesting work likely over the next 12 months:
Redevelopment of public open space for a community sports hub in Cheltenham, disposal of the Municipal Offices in Cheltenham, relocation of a market in Gloucester, disposal of sites in Gloucester and Cheltenham in connection with large scale residential developments to include substantial amounts of affordable housing, redevelopment work at Brimscombe Port and Littlecombe in Stroud, redevelopment of Swedish Timber housing sites in Stroud, redevelopment of land at Cheltenham High Street, redevelopment of a former school site in Cheltenham and disposal of the Old Town Hall in Stroud.
Senior Planning Lawyer

Hybrid - 2 days on-site per week
Day to day responsibilities:
Full range of development management work including advice on enforcement, applications and appeals (including advocacy at hearings and inquiries), planning committee attendance, planning policy and community infrastructure levy work, leading on court challenges (statutory and judicial review), development consent order processes and planning based compulsory purchase work.
Management/technical supervision responsibilities:
Responsible for the management and supervision of those in posts of Lawyer and/or Trainee Lawyer and any other members of the team as allocated.
The role also includes being part of the Extended Management Team.
Projects/interesting work likely over the next 12 months:
Judicial review work in respect of telecommunication masts (health impacts) and potentially community infrastructure levy liability notices, advice for one of our client Councils (as the local planning authority) on Garden Communities project (including bridge over rail provision), local plan work for all four of our client Councils (three of which have a joint plan) including advising in respect of representations in respect of neighbouring local planning authorities. All in the context of the various changes due to come into effect in the next few months in respect of the National Planning Policy Framework and otherwise in areas with extensive Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (National Landscapes) and Green Belt.
